Oriental Toys

Oriental toys: Disney Jasmine and Aladdin dolls by Mattel, Playmobil Asterix pyramid set. Branded toys from the palaces of Agrabah to Egypt's pyramids.

What oriental toys are there for children?

Our oriental toys are branded toys inspired by tales and ancient Egypt. They include Jasmine and Aladdin dolls and Playmobil sets. They take children to palaces, souks and pyramids. They are also collectable, for fans of Disney or Asterix.

The Disney dolls made by Mattel reproduce the characters of the animated film “Aladdin”. Jasmine wears her turquoise outfit, with a headband in her hair. Aladdin wears his purple waistcoat and his red fez, as in the film. The dolls are about 30 cm tall, and their arms and legs move so they can be posed.

The Playmobil Asterix set “La Pyramide du Pharaon” takes children into the Egypt of the comic books. Asterix and Obelix had already travelled there in the album “Asterix and Cleopatra”, published in 1965. Children replay the adventures of the Gauls around a pyramid to build. The figures, small and sturdy, fit in the hand. Once assembled, the pyramid serves as a setting for long games of play.

These toys are also a way to talk about history. A pyramid recalls the tombs of the pharaohs, built more than 4,500 years ago at Giza. A Jasmine doll can open a conversation about the tales of the One Thousand and One Nights, where the story of Aladdin comes from. The hieroglyphs drawn on the walls help to talk about Egyptian writing.

How do you choose an oriental toy according to age?

First read the age shown on the box. It takes into account the size of the pieces and the difficulty of assembly. The crossed-out “0-3” logo signals small parts that are dangerous for children under 3. The CE marking, which is compulsory, shows that the toy meets safety rules.

Before the age of 3, prefer a soft doll without detachable accessories. From 3 to 6, a fashion doll with a few clothes appeals to children who like dressing and styling. Tiny shoes and jewellery still need watching. Mattel fashion dolls generally state an age of 3 and over.

Most Playmobil boxes state an age of 4 or 5 and over. The big boxes, like a pyramid, need an adult’s help for the first assembly. The illustrated instruction leaflet, almost without text, shows each step in pictures. The figures can be combined with those from other Playmobil Asterix boxes.

Also think about the child’s tastes. A fan of princesses will choose the Jasmine doll. A reader of Asterix or a pharaoh enthusiast will prefer the Playmobil pyramid. For a teenager, our oriental video games extend the adventure on screen.

How do you clean and store a doll or a Playmobil set?

Clean a doll with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Do not immerse it in water if it has delicate hair or a mechanism. Brush the hair with a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends. Avoid hot water, which can frizz or damage synthetic hair.

Fabric clothes are washed by hand, in cold water. Dry them flat, away from a radiator, to keep the colours. Small jewellery and shoes are stored in a compartment box. A closed box also protects the doll from dust.

Playmobil pieces are washed in a bowl of soapy lukewarm water. Rinse them, then leave them to dry on a tea towel. Avoid the dishwasher: the heat can deform small pieces and peel off the stickers. Keep the instructions: they let you rebuild the pyramid after a house move or a big tidy-up.
