Oriental Video Games

Oriental video games: Assassin's Creed Mirage, Assassin's Creed Origins and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Explore the East of caliphs and legends.

Which oriental video games are set in Egypt, Baghdad or Persia?

Oriental video games take you into ancient Egypt, the Baghdad of the caliphs or a legendary Persia. Our range brings together three Ubisoft games: two Assassin’s Creed titles and a Prince of Persia. These are adventure games, where you explore, climb and fight. They are played solo, on console or PC.

Assassin’s Creed Origins, released in 2017, takes place in Egypt, in the time of Cleopatra. You play Bayek, a protector of the Siwa oasis. The map reproduces the Nile, the desert, Alexandria, Memphis and the pyramids of Giza. Players can climb the Great Pyramid and explore the inside of tombs.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage, released in 2023, is set in Baghdad in the 9th century, under the Abbasid dynasty. You follow Basim, a young street thief who joins a secret brotherhood. The game offers Arabic voices, for an atmosphere closer to the period. Developed by the studio Ubisoft Bordeaux, it recreates the streets, the markets and the House of Wisdom from the work of historians.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, released in 2024, draws on Persian mythology. You play Sargon, a young warrior who sets out to rescue a kidnapped prince on Mount Qaf. It is a two-dimensional platform game, where you run, jump and fight from room to room. It was created by the studio Ubisoft Montpellier.

How do you choose an oriental video game?

First check the PEGI rating, the logo printed on the box. Both Assassin’s Creed games are rated PEGI 18: they contain realistic fighting and blood. This logo means that the game is not recommended for anyone under 18. The Lost Crown has less violent fights, in a style close to a cartoon.

Then choose your console. These games are available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is also available on Nintendo Switch, handy for playing on the move. Check the exact name of the console on the box, for example PS4 or PS5.

Also look at the style of play. Origins is a big open world: you can spend more than 30 hours in it. Mirage is shorter and puts the emphasis on stealth. It goes back to the style of the first Assassin’s Creed games, centred on a single big city. The Lost Crown is played from a side view, with precise jumps that demand skill.

Finally, think about language. All three games offer menus and subtitles in French. Mirage also lets you play with the Arabic voices and French subtitles, to hear the language of Baghdad.

How can you discover the history of the East with a video game?

Assassin’s Creed Origins offers a mode called Discovery Tour. It removes the fighting and turns the map into an open-air museum. It was designed with historians and Egyptologists. Guided tours explain mummification, the building of the pyramids or life in Alexandria.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage offers history cards, unlocked by visiting places in Baghdad. They present the daily life, the sciences and the trades of the Abbasid era, with photos of museum objects. These cards were prepared with historians and partner museums.

The Discovery Tour, with no fighting, can also be watched with a child. A pharaoh, a caliph or a pyramid seen on screen becomes a gateway to a book or a documentary. Ask the child to guess what an object was used for before reading the explanation. Our Arabic educational resources complete this journey with activities for learning the language.

For younger children, our oriental toys replay Egypt and the tales away from screens. Also discover all our oriental culture, from games to objects of tradition.
